Since the United Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and its „Agenda 21“ resolution, in all fields of geography the discussin on „sustainable development“ has intensified. The idea of sustainability which attempts to bring economic and social development into union with ecological interests has entered the scientific and political debate through the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development („Brundtland-Report“). The analytical concept of „Political Ecology“ focusses on a similar topic. It attempts to analyse the roles of political, economic, and supra-national actors and their impact on natural environments. With respect to the concept of sustainability, this article discusses the new cross-border traffic routes which are being planned or are under construction in mainland South-East Asia. The economic, ecological and socio-political dimensions are analysed. A special focus lies on the Republic of Laos. Since becoming a member of ASEAN in 1997, Laos is experiencing an expansion of the traffic infrastructure by foreign investors which is almost unmatched worldwide.
