Pages 113 - 123

The German state (Bundesland) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with it`s outstanding beauty and unique natural and cultural potentials belongs to one of the three leading tourist destinations in Germany. Ongoing tourist development will cause strong tension between the protection and the use of these potentials. Zones for tourist developments and zones of protected areas (e.g. National parks, nature parks) overlap in the current spatial development plans. Not to risk the unique potentials get destroyed irretrievable the State has to react not only to the demands of tourism but to supply sustainable and future orientated alternatives for the region. The project „High Quality Tourism - sustainable development in sensitive areas in four regions around the Baltic Sea“ contributes a basic part to this direction of development. As part of the EU-Initiative INTERREG II C, with was agreed on in 1994/1996 as a part of the supranational development perspectives “Visions and strategies around the Baltic Sea 2010“, the project with it`s five partners from Sweden,Germany, Poland and Latvia aims to develop suitable tourism in sensitive areas with the interaction to densly populated areas. The research approach on High Quality Tourism within these spatial constellation will be introduced.
