Cuba’s research and development strategy in
biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries – road to success or
dead end?

During the last two decades Cuba has developed biotechnology
and pharmaceutical industry with high priority. In spite of remarkable
scientific progress the expected economic success did not take place
so far. The article outlines the specific goals and general framework
of the ambitious Cuban development strategy, describes the building
up of the cientific cluster of West Havanna and discusses the problems
of commercial exploitation of the high-grade medical products. Finally
the outcome of Cuban efforts concerning research and development
in the field of biotechnology and medicine are evaluated.
