The presented study examines the question whether in the restructuring of the east German economy the existing infrastructure has positively influenced regional economic development.Overall the example of Thuringia has shown that proximity to the south-western cores of agglomerationrather than motorway access is most important for economic development. Nevertheless,motorways accelerate the process of adaptation and productivity. In structurally strong regions,they can positively influence numerous regional economic indicators.
