After the promulgation of the Foreign Investment Law in
        1988 Vietnam was impressively successful in obtaining foreign direct investment.
        Following an upward trend during subsequent years, for the first time
        in 1996 the number of approved investment projects went down. Presently
        it remains unclear whether this is the result of reduced interest on the
        part of investors or a consequence of the approval procedure of state
        authority. The article gives an overview of the approved foreign investment
        projects which, over the years, changed significantly in structure, composition
        and regional distribution.
